Adra is situated in the west part of the province of Almeria, 50km away from the capital city of Almeria, in an area known as ‘El Poniente’. Like most of the Costa del Almeria, Adra enjoys a mild climate in the winter and high temperatures, around 38 degrees, during the summer.

The fishing town is the fourth most important town in the province with over 24,000 inhabitants. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century, it was originally named Abdera and right through to the Roman occupation the town was a successful trading post.

Attractions & Sightseeing

Adra boasts some interesting archaeological sites including a permanent exhibition that shows the daily life for residents of Adra in Roman times. There is also a museum, theatre and the Historical archives, which documents the history of Adra. Worth a visit are Adra’s churches, the Inmaculate Conception Ermita de San Sebastian dates back to the 16th century.

Also of note is the Fuente del Mar monument, erected in 2004 in commemoration of local sailors who have lost their lives at sea. The Fuente homenaje a la Agricultura is a fountain built as a tribute to the local farming community.

Natural surroundings

The countryside and beaches surrounding Adra are of particular natural beauty; located just south of Sierra Nevada en Baja Alpujarra (low Alpujarra) the area is boasts great ecological value with an abundance of flora and fauna.

Of special interest is Las Albuferas de Adra (The Lagoons of Adra), whch were formed by an old river delta from the Río (River) Adra. The lagoons form a small wetland nature reserve, a natural habitat for wildlife; it’s an exceptional location for bird watchers with around 140 different species, including some endangered species.

Adra also benefits from kilometres of beautiful sandy beaches, with clear waters, perfect for swimming and diving. The best beaches close to the town are Playa de la Sirena Loca, Playa del Carbonocillo, Playa de San Nicolas, Playa del Censo. They are all blue flag beaches, safe and perfect for children.

The Adra Feria (Fair) takes place each year between the 5th and 10th September and there is a fabulous Flamenco festival, held every year on the last Saturday of August.

Adra has the perfect all-year round sub-tropical climate. In this exceptional environment, temperatures rarely fall below 20ºC. During the summer months the temperature rises to 30-35ºC, dropping again around mid-September to a milder, but still warm 23ºC-27ºC degrees. The winters are mild and mostly dry, although the nights can sometimes feel chilly.
